ABSTRACT: Starting from the term "humanism", which can be understood in a broad sense as the valorization of the man and/or of the human condition, the objective of this work is to analyze how Eça de Queirós and Miguel Torga affirm the situation of the Portuguese man without restraining to the
narrow limits of nationalism. In this sense, it was envisaged the possibility of revealing some aesthetic and theoretical characteristics of Eça and Torga‘s short-story by which an identity concept is formed and which surpasses the
national instinct to become universal. In other words, the two authors discuss the human existential character from the Portuguese individual and expand the philosophical and political precepts with which they were committed in
the 19th and 20th centuries respectively. Comparing the short-stories "O Tesouro", by Eça and "O Sésamo", by Torga, in whose plots there is the tradition of medieval legends, we perceive the lines of the socio-cultural perspectives which they print to the process of literary creation, in which "humanism" is the main element contained in the works, an important
element for the interpretation of two of the most emblematic names of Portuguese Literature which, even when they represent the local inhabitant, they achieve significance beyond regional boundaries.
KEY WORDS: Eça de Queirós. Miguel Torga. Humanism. Short-story.
